Reproduction rights licence for Quebec universities

Create coursepacks, share content on a secure learning management system or display documents in class while still respecting copyright.

Authorized use in your university

Under the university reproduction rights licence, you can conveniently and legally use content protected by the Copyright Act. There are four requirements that must be met:

Types of use allowed

You can reproduce excerpts from publications on paper or in digital format for teaching or research purposes. The following types of use are allowed under your university licence:

Create coursepacks that can include short stories, poems, essays, specialized articles and chapters from a variety of publications.

Share excerpts from publications with your students and colleagues via email or a learning management system.

Display text excerpts or images on a smartboard during classes or integrate them into a slideshow.

Give your students photocopies of excerpts from publications.

Students are allowed to print out a paper copy of a digital format excerpt provided by a professor or instructor. They can also make a copy on local storage media such as a USB flash drive.

Usage limits

The usage limits under your university reproduction rights licence apply per semester for the same course group.

You’re allowed to reproduce:

  • 20% of a publication in the Copibec repertoire

The following can also be copied under the licence:

  • An article
  • Song lyrics
  • Short text from a collective work
  • Newspaper page
  • Entry from a reference book Image from a book, magazine or newspaper
  • Chapter that is not more than 20% of the total number of pages in a book

Here are some examples of authorized content use according to your university licence:

20% of a publication

Put 20 pages from a 100-page book on the intranet for your students

1 article

Hand out photocopies of a magazine article in class

1 page

Display a newspaper page on screen for your class

1 chapter

Reproduce an entire chapter without exceeding 20% of the book

1 complete text from a collective work

Include a short story in a coursepack distributed to your students


Insert a chart or image from a book into a coursepack

Song lyrics

Put the lyrics to a song on a learning management system

1 reference entry

Email an entire entry from an encyclopedia

For any use that exceeds the authorized limits in your university licence, you need to get permission from Copibec.
